Organizational NPI #- When Do I Need One?
Let’s discuss the different NPI #’s and when each one is appliable.
An NPI (National Provider Identifier) is granted via the NPPES website (National Plan & Provider Enumeration Systems, Link: https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/#/) to healthcare providers, and typically to the healthcare practice as well. This identifier remains with the provider or practice for the duration of their practice. Now, let’s delve into the variances:
- Type 1 NPI #: Frequently referred to as an “Individual NPI #”, this is assigned to the healthcare provider’s Name and SSN.
- Type 2 NPI #: Commonly referred to as a Group NPI # or Organizational NPI #, this is provided to the healthcare practice’s Business Name and Tax ID#. The assignment of a Type 2 NPI# is unrelated to the number of providers working for the practice. For instance, a sole proprietor of a private practice, for whom the IRS has issued a Tax ID# to the business name, would be eligible to acquire a Type 2 NPI #.
If you’re a new practice or new to the NPPES website, acquiring a Group NPI# might present challenges. Fortunately, Rush Credentialing is here to assist you, offering step-by-step instructions on obtaining it.
